While there are plenty actors like Kari Wahlgren, Crispin Freeman, etc who love doing anime and Japanese game projects, they also respect themselves enough to not lower their standards. But expect many of them to respect the union and the standards that come with it, and choose not to do that method. So if any actor wants to enough, they can get awhile with it. Several times we’ve seen union VAs use aliases or go uncredited to appear in a non-union show/game. Very few, if any, union members view the union as a hindrance on their career.Īlso there are loopholes. Due to the fact that the VA can usually get higher paying gigs due to union connections, and also because of the fact that the price that the non-union production is paying them may not actually be a match for said VA’s standards. It’s often something that the VA agrees with. But the situations where a VA can’t reprise their role in a show/game/etc. And plenty of VAs fit under that category. There’s a status in the union where you’re allowed to do non-union projects too. But they’ve been the standard with most western cartoons and video games still.Īs for the statement about it preventing actors from popping up in certain projects. But due to the anime crash near the end of last decade, companies stopped prioritizing them. Union used to be the standard for LA and Canadian dubs. Union productions will set certain standards for the work conditions, guarantee of certain minimum payment regardless of the time, help with gigs, and guarantee further benefits. To protect the people in it and also help them make a living. The actor union is here for the same reason that most unions are. But from my years of observation here’s what I’ve gathered:
